How To: Wear A Face Mask With Glasses

As many of you might have already experienced, when warm breath escapes the top of a mask, it condenses on the cool lens, clouds up your glasses, and impairs your vision.

You can continue experiencing this fog, or you could try some of Pretavoir’s simple tips and tricks in order to take care of your wellbeing and vision.

WASH YOUR GLASSES
Washing your spectacles with soap and water will leave behind a thin sterile coating that reduces the impact of hot air meeting a cold surface.

According to a 2011 study released by the journal of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, cleaning your glasses with soapy water and allowing them to air-dry before you go out can help reduce fogging. We would not normally recommend this due to the abrasive nature of the soap on your lenses, however, this is a method being practised in order to create a protective seal against moisture - please be careful if you choose to try this!

This article can be simplified to four easy steps:

1. Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water before handling your glasses - Remember, clean your hands for 20 seconds (Sing  "Happy Birthday" twice!) before you rinse.

2. Wet your glasses, then lather soap on the lenses - There is no strict time limit for this process but ensure you are extremely gentle when rubbing the lenses.

3. Rinse your glasses under warm water - Make sure you do not leave any soap on your lenses. Soap stains will be even more irritating than the fog…

4. Let your glasses air dry - If you do not have time to let them air dry then gently dry your glasses with a clean towel or lens cloth.

USE LENS WIPES OR ANTI-FOG SPRAYS

If your lenses haven’t been treated with an anti-fog protective coating then you could try some of these care products.

We offer ZEISS Lens Wipes in Packs of 30 and Packs of 200. These pre-moistened, micro-fine tissues ensure an effective and fast cleaning method when you are out and about. The wipes have an exceptionally fine structure to ensure gentle cleaning of all spectacle lenses, even with high-quality coatings. It is pre-moistened with a unique combination of two active agents which are also used for medical equipment cleaning - these wipes can also be used for cleaning all types of LCD displays, smartphones, tablets, PCs, laptops, etc. easily and with no streaks.

IMPROVE THE FIT OF YOUR MASK
When you’re first adjusting to wearing a mask with glasses or sunglasses, you might be tempted to move the mask as far away as possible, but be sure not to make the mask entirely redundant.

There are a few different ways to fit your face mask if your mask has:

- Ear Loops then hold the mask by each loop and place a loop around each ear.

- Ties then guide your mask towards your nose, place each tie around the crown of your head and secure with a bow.

- Bands then bring the mask to your nose level and pull the top strap over your head so that it rests over the crown of your head, then pull the bottom strap over your head so that it rests at the nape of your neck.

Once your mask is on, you may feel your breath slipping out from the top of the mask: that is a signal that your mask is not fitted properly. To optimize the fit of your facemask you can try one of the following methods:

TAPE YOUR MASK
A really simple fix is to put a small piece of tape on the bridge of your nose, But make sure it’s cloth tape that won’t irritate your skin such as surgical tape you might have in a first-aid kit. This will allow the mask not to slip on your face as easily.

MOVE YOUR GLASSES DOWN
Wear your glasses closer to the tip of your nose. Now, this may seem a bit strange, but if you cannot get the optimal fit wearing both your mask and your glasses, then this method will increase your personal airflow.

PULL YOUR MASK UP
If your vision, or perhaps vanity, isn’t quite ready to wear your glasses at the very tip of your nose then try pulling your mask up higher (making sure to keep the rest of your face covered) and resting your glasses on top of your mask. Again, this will increase airflow.

CHANGE YOUR BREATHING PATTERN
Another thing you can do is to try and play around with your breathing. Breathing predominantly from your mouth into your mask increases your chances of fogging more than if you breathe from your nose. Equally, if your head is angled downward you are disrupting your personal airflow, making more hot air to gather and fog your glasses than if your head is held high, angled towards the sky.

Stay safe!
