Varifocal Lenses

Varifocal (Progressive) Lenses: Your Guide to Clarity and Convenience

Varifocal glasses, or multifocals, are a significant innovation in eyewear, providing a seamless solution for those needing multiple prescriptions in one lens.

As we age, our eyes often require enhanced magnification for reading. While you may have used only distance glasses before, by your early 40s, the need for both distance and reading correction typically arises. Even if you've never needed glasses, a reading prescription may now be necessary.

The beauty of varifocals lies in their ability to combine reading and distance glasses into one design, eliminating the need to switch between pairs. Unlike single vision lenses, which can blur distance vision, varifocal lenses offer clear vision across all distances.

At PRET A VOIR, we recognize the importance of clear vision and convenience. We offer a wide range of varifocal lenses from top brands like Hoya, Zeiss, Essilor, and more. Our experienced advisors are here to help you make an informed decision about your eyewear.

How Do I Know I Need Varifocal Glasses?

Recognizing the need for varifocal glasses often comes with changes in vision, particularly around age 40.

Varifocal, or progressive lenses, help those with presbyopia who need assistance with both near and distance vision.

If you frequently switch between reading materials and distant objects or experience eyestrain when focusing on screens or text, it may be time for varifocals. Other signs include difficulty seeing in low light or needing more lighting for reading. Progressive lenses can eliminate the need to switch between glasses.

Consulting an eye care professional will help determine if varifocals are right for you, offering multifocal correction in a single pair and simplifying your eyewear routine.

How do I Order Varifocal Lenses?

Once you've selected your desired frame, adding varifocal lenses to your order is a straightforward process.

We offer four distinct varifocal lens types, catering to different preferences and needs.

    • TruOptics Visio: A budget-friendly, high-quality choice. TruOptics optician approved lenses with advanced technology for precise, comfortable vision. Ensuring excellent clear vision daily. Discover value and quality in varifocal option.

    • Synchrony Ultra HD: Offering versatile vision with seamless transitions between near, intermediate, and far distances. With advanced technology, X-Series lenses provide enhanced comfort and sharpness, ideal for modern lifestyles and digital device usage.

To ensure a precise fit, we'll guide you through the fitting process:

After receiving the frame, we'll request specific varifocal measurements, which can be obtained by following these steps:

      • Enlist the help of a friend to take well-lit, in-focus photographs of you wearing the frame [we recommend giving your camera lens a quick clean with a microfibre cloth before snapping your picture to ensure it is a clear image].

      • Maintain a distance of at least 10 feet (3 meters) from the camera, with the lens level with your eyes. Unfortunately, 'selfie'-style or front facing camera shots are not accurate enough for us to confidently create your lenses.

      • Capture an image of the frame on your face, ensuring your eyes are clearly visible through the lenses, looking directly in the camera.

Once you have the ideal photograph, please email it to info@pretavoir.co.uk.

Our dedicated staff will review the image to ensure accuracy and clarity, then guide you on returning the frame to us. Please do not return the frame until we have confirmed that your image is acceptable and will allow us to get all the required measurements.

Once we confirm the clarity of your images, we will proceed to order your chosen varifocal lenses. You will then recieve a free-return to return your eyewear to us, to have your lenses fitted with your new varifocal lens. This seamless process minimizes any delay between receiving your frame and fitting your lenses.

Our goal is to return your new varifocal glasses to you as promptly as possible. We quote approximately 7-10 working days, from the day we confirm your photo, for us to order, fit and get your new varifocal glasses back to you.

How Do Varifocal Glasses Work?

Varifocal glasses, also known as progressive lenses, work by integrating multiple prescriptions into a single lens to provide clear vision at different distances. They are designed to address presbyopia, an age-related condition that leads to difficulty focusing on close-up objects.

The key features and principles of how varifocal glasses work are as follows:

Gradual Prescription Transition:
Varifocal lenses have a gradual transition of prescription power from the top of the lens (for distance vision) to the bottom (for near vision). This transition area, known as the corridor or progression zone, smoothly shifts the prescription for intermediate distances in between.

Three Focal Zones:
Varifocal lenses incorporate three main focal zones: the upper portion for distance vision, the middle area for intermediate vision (such as computer screens), and the lower portion for reading and close-up tasks.

Natural Viewing:
Unlike bifocal lenses with a distinct visible line, varifocal lenses offer a seamless and natural viewing experience. There is no abrupt shift between prescription zones, allowing you to look through different parts of the lens for various distances without noticeable disruptions.

Head Movement:
To access the different focal zones, varifocal wearers often need to make slight adjustments to their head position. Tilting the head slightly up for distance vision and down for near vision helps direct the gaze through the appropriate part of the lens.

Customization:
Opticians take into account individual factors such as prescription strength, frame choice, and personal habits to customize the design of varifocal lenses. This ensures that the focal zones align with your specific visual needs.

Adaptation Period:
Adjusting to varifocal lenses may require a short adaptation period as you learn to navigate the lens and find the best head positions for different activities. With practice, this process becomes more intuitive.

Varifocal glasses offer the convenience of addressing multiple vision needs within a single pair of eyewear. They are particularly beneficial for individuals who require correction for both presbyopia and another refractive error like nearsightedness or farsightedness. Consultation with an eye care professional is crucial to determine if varifocal glasses are suitable for your vision requirements and lifestyle.

How Do You Wear Varifocal Glasses?

Wearing varifocal glasses effectively involves understanding how to utilize the different prescription zones within the lenses for various distances. Here's how to wear varifocal glasses:

Proper Frame Positioning:
Ensure your glasses are properly positioned on your face. The top of the frame should align with your eyebrows, and the center of the lenses should be aligned with your pupils. Opticians can assist in adjusting the frame for an optimal fit.

Natural Head Movements:
Varifocal wearers often use slight head movements to direct their gaze through the appropriate part of the lens. Tilt your head slightly downward to access the reading or close-up zone, and level your head for intermediate or distance vision.

Intermediate Vision:
For tasks like using a computer or viewing objects at arm's length, look straight ahead without tilting your head. Your eyes will naturally align with the intermediate zone of the lens.

Distance Vision:
To see objects in the distance, raise your head and look through the upper portion of the lens designed for distance vision. Avoid tilting your head up excessively, as this may take you out of the distance zone.

Reading and Close-Up Vision:
When reading a book or performing close-up tasks, tilt your head slightly downward and look through the lower portion of the lens. Find the angle that provides the clearest vision for your near tasks.

Practice and Adaptation:
Initially, practice using varifocal glasses in various situations to become comfortable with the different head movements required for clear vision at different distances. It may take some time to adapt, but with practice, it becomes more intuitive.

Follow Optician Recommendations:
Your optician will provide guidance on wearing varifocal glasses, including how to adjust your head movements and tips for optimizing your visual experience. Our team will always be on hand to contact & speak to if you have any queries about your new lenses.

Regular Eye Check-ups:
Schedule regular eye check-ups to ensure your prescription is up to date and your varifocal glasses are properly adjusted. Changes in your vision may require modifications to your lenses.

Remember that adaptation to varifocal glasses varies from person to person. With practice and patience, you'll become more skilled at using the different focal zones to comfortably accommodate your various visual needs throughout the day.

Can I Use My Current Prescription for Varifocal Lenses?

Absolutely! If you have a recent prescription from your eye care professional, you can use it to order varifocal lenses online.

During the ordering process, you'll have the option to input your prescription details, including sphere, cylinder, axis, and any additional measurements required for varifocal lenses. However, please note that varifocal prescriptions may have specific measurements unique to this lens type, so it's recommended to consult our experienced advisors for guidance to ensure accurate and comfortable fitting.

What Should I Consider When Choosing a Frame for Varifocal Lenses?

Selecting the right frame for your varifocal lenses is crucial for both style and functionality. Here are some factors to consider:

  • Frame Size: Choose a frame that is compatible with the size of the varifocal lenses. Larger frames typically provide a larger reading area, while smaller frames might be more suitable for discreet appearance.

  • Frame Shape: The shape of the frame should complement your facial features and personal style. Round, square, oval, and rectangular frames all offer different aesthetics.

  • Nose Bridge Fit: Ensure the frame's nose bridge sits comfortably on your nose without sliding down or causing pressure points.

  • Lens Height: Opt for a frame with adequate lens height to accommodate both distance and reading zones without compromising on either.

  • Frame Material: Different materials, such as metal, acetate, or titanium, offer varying levels of durability, weight, and flexibility. Choose one that aligns with your preferences.

Our knowledgeable advisors are available to help you navigate these considerations and provide personalized recommendations based on your unique needs and style preferences. Contact us via Live Chat, Phone, or Email for expert assistance.

How Long Does It Take to Adjust to Varifocal Lenses?

Adjusting to varifocal lenses may take a short period of time, as your eyes adapt to the new way of focusing at varying distances. Some individuals may find the transition seamless, while others might require a few days to a couple of weeks to fully acclimate.

To facilitate a smoother adjustment process, follow these tips:

  • Wear your new varifocal glasses consistently, allowing your eyes to become accustomed to the different zones.
  • Move your head slightly to locate the appropriate zone for different tasks, such as looking straight ahead for distance vision and lowering your gaze for reading.
  • Practice using the intermediate and reading zones by engaging in activities like working on a computer or reading a book.
  • Be patient and give yourself time to adapt. If you experience persistent discomfort or vision issues, contact our advisors for guidance.

What Else Are Varifocals Called?

Varifocals, also known as progressive lenses or multifocal lenses, can be referred to by various terms within the eyewear industry. Here are some alternative terms that are commonly used to describe varifocal lenses:

  1. Progressive Lenses: This term emphasizes the gradual transition of prescription strength from the top of the lens (for distance vision) to the bottom (for reading or close-up vision). It reflects the smooth progression of lens power between different focal points.

  2. Multifocal Lenses: Similar to "varifocal," this term indicates that the lens has multiple focal points or prescriptions within a single lens. It covers both bifocal (two prescriptions) and trifocal (three prescriptions) lenses.

  3. No-Line Bifocals: Bifocals traditionally had a visible line on the lens separating the distance and reading segments. No-line bifocals, or no-line progressives, are a modern version of bifocals where the transition between focal points is seamless and gradual.

  4. PAL Lenses: PAL stands for "Progressive Addition Lens." It's a technical term used to describe varifocal lenses that offer a gradual change in prescription power.

  5. Graduated Lenses: This term highlights the graduated change in prescription strength across the lens, accommodating different visual needs.

  6. Varied Focus Lenses: Reflecting the lens's ability to provide clear vision at various distances, this term describes the versatility of varifocals.

  7. All-Distance Lenses: Indicating the lens's capacity to provide clear vision across a range of distances, this term emphasizes the convenience of multifocal lenses.

  8. Ergonomic Lenses: Some manufacturers use this term to emphasize the design of their varifocal lenses, which are intended to provide comfortable vision across different activities.

  9. Personalized Lenses: Some varifocal lenses are tailored to an individual's specific measurements and visual needs, making the term "personalized" an apt description.

  10. FreeForm Lenses: Some modern varifocal lenses are crafted using advanced FreeForm Digital Technology, allowing for highly customized and precise lens designs.

Are Varifocal Lenses Suitable for All Activities?

Varifocal lenses are versatile and designed to accommodate various activities, from driving and watching TV to reading and using digital devices.

However, some individuals may prefer specialized lenses for specific tasks, such as computer work. If you spend extended periods on a computer, you might consider occupational varifocal lenses optimized for intermediate distances. Our experienced advisors can help you determine the best lens type based on your lifestyle and visual needs.

Can I Wear Varifocal Lenses in Any Frame?

While varifocal lenses can be fitted into a wide range of frames, the optimal fit and performance may vary based on the frame's size, shape, and design. Larger frames often provide a more generous reading area, enhancing comfort for close-up tasks. It's advisable to choose frames that are compatible with the lens size required for your prescription. Our knowledgeable advisors can assist you in selecting frames that work seamlessly with varifocal lenses.

How Do I Clean and Care for Varifocal Lenses?

Proper care is essential to maintain the clarity and longevity of your varifocal lenses. Follow these steps for cleaning and caring for your lenses:

  • Use a gentle lens cleaning solution or warm, soapy water to clean your lenses.
  • Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that can damage lens coatings.
  • Use a microfiber cloth or a lens cleaning cloth to wipe the lenses gently, avoiding excessive pressure.
  • Store your glasses in a protective case when not in use to prevent scratches and dust accumulation.
  • Avoid placing your glasses face down, as this can cause scratches on the lenses.

Regular maintenance and careful handling will ensure that your varifocal lenses continue to provide clear and comfortable vision.

Can I Use Varifocal Lenses with Prescription Sunglasses?

Yes, you can enjoy the benefits of varifocal lenses in your prescription sunglasses. Varifocal sunglasses provide clear vision at varying distances while protecting your eyes from harmful UV rays. You have the option to choose from a variety of lens tints and coatings, enhancing both visual comfort and sun protection. Our advisors can help you customize your prescription sunglasses with the appropriate varifocal lenses for your outdoor activities.

Can I Wear My Varifocals Driving?

Yes, you can wear varifocal glasses while driving.
Varifocal lenses are designed to provide clear vision at various distances, making them suitable for a wide range of activities, including driving.

When you're on the road, varifocal lenses allow you to see clearly both in the distance and at intermediate distances, such as the dashboard or side mirrors. This eliminates the need to switch between different pairs of glasses while driving.
However, there might be a slight adjustment period when you start wearing varifocal glasses for driving.

The transition between different prescription zones may take some getting used to, especially during activities that involve quick shifts in focus, like checking the rear-view mirror or reading road signs. It's important to allow yourself time to adapt to the new way of seeing with varifocals.

Are Varifocals Suitable For Computer Use?

Varifocal glasses can be suitable for computer use, but there are a few considerations to keep in mind. Varifocals, also known as progressive lenses, are designed to provide clear vision at multiple distances, including up close for reading, intermediate for tasks like using a computer, and distance for activities like driving or watching TV.

For computer use, varifocal glasses can be beneficial in certain situations:

Reduced Switching: Varifocal lenses eliminate the need to switch between different pairs of glasses when shifting between reading materials and the computer screen.

Convenience: You can maintain a clear view of your computer screen and your immediate surroundings without constantly taking off or changing glasses.

However, there are a few considerations to be aware of:

Positioning: Depending on the size and layout of your computer screen, you may need to adjust your head or screen position to access the intermediate zone of the varifocal lens for optimal clarity.

Ergonomics: Proper ergonomic setup is important for comfortable computer use. Ensure your computer screen is at a comfortable height and distance to minimize strain on your neck and eyes.

Adaptation Period: When you first start using varifocal glasses for computer work, there may be a short adaptation period as you learn to navigate the different prescription zones.

Dedicated Computer Glasses: Some individuals who spend extended periods on the computer prefer dedicated single-vision or occupational lenses customized for computer use. These lenses are optimized for intermediate distances and provide a wider field of view for the computer screen.

Ultimately, the suitability of varifocal glasses for computer use depends on your personal preferences, the nature of your computer work, and your comfort level with adjusting to the different focal areas of the lens.

Can Varifocals Be Adjusted?

Yes, varifocal glasses can be adjusted to ensure optimal comfort and visual performance.

The adjustment process is typically performed by a trained optician or eyewear professional. Here are some key points to know about adjusting varifocal glasses:

Fitting and Measurement:
When you first receive your varifocal glasses, the optician will take precise measurements and fit the glasses to your face. This includes adjusting the frame's position on your nose, temple length, and ensuring the lenses are aligned properly with your eyes.

Position of Wear (POW) Measurements: Opticians may also take specific measurements known as Position of Wear (POW) measurements. These measurements account for factors like how the glasses sit on your face, the distance between your eyes, and the angle of the frame. POW measurements help customize the varifocal lens design to your individual needs.

Customization for Visual Zones: Opticians may make additional adjustments to ensure that the different focal areas of the varifocal lenses align correctly with your eyes. This involves optimizing the position of the near, intermediate, and distance vision zones based on your prescription and visual habits.

Adaptation Period: After adjustments are made, there may be a brief adaptation period as you get used to the new way of seeing with varifocal lenses. During this time, you may need to practice tilting your head slightly to access different parts of the lens for various distances.

Follow-Up Appointments: Opticians often schedule follow-up appointments to check how well you've adapted to your varifocal glasses and make any necessary fine-tuning adjustments.

It's important to communicate any discomfort or visual issues you experience while wearing varifocal glasses to your optician. Adjustments can help address these concerns and ensure that your varifocal glasses provide clear and comfortable vision for all your daily activities.

Can Varifocal Lenses Be Thinned?

Yes, varifocal lenses can be thinned using high-index lens materials.

High-index materials are designed to bend light more efficiently than standard materials, allowing the lenses to be made thinner and lighter while maintaining the same prescription power. Thinning varifocal lenses can be especially beneficial for individuals with higher prescriptions, as it reduces the overall weight and thickness of the lenses, resulting in a more cosmetically appealing and comfortable pair of glasses.

Here are a few key points to consider when thinning varifocal lenses:

Prescription Strength:
Thinning varifocal lenses is most commonly recommended for individuals with higher prescriptions, as the reduction in lens thickness is more noticeable and beneficial for these cases.

Frame Choice:
The frame you choose can impact the degree to which the lenses can be thinned. Rimless or semi-rimless frames may allow for more significant thinning, while thicker or smaller frames may have limitations.

Lens Material:
Opt for high-index lens materials (e.g., 1.67, 1.60, or 1.74 index) to achieve optimal thinning. These materials are designed to efficiently refract light, allowing for thinner lenses.

Cosmetic Benefits:
Thinner lenses often result in a more aesthetically pleasing appearance, especially for strong prescriptions. They can reduce the "bulky" look of thick lenses and offer a more natural and attractive look.

Visual Clarity:
Thinning varifocal lenses does not compromise visual quality. The prescription power remains accurate, and the multi-focal design for near, intermediate, and distance vision is preserved.

While thinning varifocal lenses can offer both cosmetic and comfort benefits, it's essential to balance the desire for thinner lenses with other factors such as frame compatibility, lens durability, and cost considerations. An optician can provide guidance and recommendations based on your individual needs and preferences.

Can Varifocals Make You Dizzy?

Yes, it is possible for varifocal lenses to cause dizziness, especially during the initial adaptation period.

Varifocal lenses have multiple prescription zones for different distances (near, intermediate, and distance vision) within a single lens. As your eyes adjust to using these different zones and learning to position your head correctly, you may experience sensations of dizziness or visual discomfort. This is a common phenomenon and is known as "varifocal or progressive lens adaptation."

During the adaptation process, your brain and eyes need time to coordinate and learn how to use the different parts of the lens effectively.

Here are a few reasons why varifocal lenses might cause dizziness initially:

Head Movement: Varifocal lenses require specific head movements to access different focal areas. Rapid or exaggerated head movements during the adaptation period can lead to a feeling of imbalance or dizziness.

Peripheral Distortion: Some individuals may experience peripheral distortion or blurriness when looking through the sides of the lens. This can contribute to feelings of dizziness, especially when shifting your gaze quickly.

Visual Confusion: The brain needs to adjust to interpreting visual information from different parts of the lens simultaneously. This process can initially lead to visual confusion and contribute to dizziness.

Visual Overload: Switching between the various prescription zones in the lens can initially overwhelm the visual system, leading to feelings of dizziness.

Lack of Visual Habit: If you are new to varifocal lenses, your eyes and brain may not yet have developed the habit of using them correctly, which can result in temporary dizziness.

It's important to note that these sensations of dizziness are often temporary and tend to subside as your eyes and brain adapt to the new visual experience. If you experience persistent or severe dizziness, it's recommended to consult your eye care professional. They can provide guidance, make any necessary adjustments to the glasses, and offer advice on how to manage the adaptation process more comfortably.

Yes, many varifocal lenses can be equipped with blue light protection coatings to help reduce digital eye strain. These coatings filter out harmful blue light emitted by digital screens and artificial lighting. You can select this additional coating when checking out on our website.

Do Varifocal Lenses Work for Progressive Eye Conditions?

Varifocal lenses are primarily designed to address presbyopia, an age-related condition. However, they may not be suitable for addressing more complex and progressive eye conditions. Consult our customer care team with your prescription for a more personalized recommendation.

Can I Get Varifocal Lenses for Sports or Outdoor Activities?

While varifocal lenses are versatile, they may not be the ideal choice for fast-paced or dynamic activities like sports. Specialized eyewear options, such as sports-specific glasses or prescription sunglasses, might offer better performance and safety.

What's the Difference Between Varifocal and Bifocal Lenses?

Varifocal lenses offer a seamless transition between multiple prescriptions within a single lens, providing continuous vision from near to far distances. Bifocal lenses have a visible line separating two distinct prescriptions for near and distance vision.

Can I Wear Varifocal Lenses with Transitions for Sun Protection?

Yes, you can combine varifocal lenses with Transitions® technology. These lenses automatically darken in sunlight to provide UV protection and comfort, transitioning to clear indoors.

How Do Varifocal Lenses Compare to Reading Glasses?

Varifocal lenses offer a seamless transition between near and distance vision, eliminating the need for constantly switching between reading glasses and distance glasses. They provide a more convenient and aesthetically pleasing solution.

Are Varifocal Lenses Available for Children or Teenagers?

Varifocal lenses are typically designed for individuals experiencing presbyopia, which becomes prominent in middle age. Children and teenagers usually have different vision needs, and single-vision or other specialized lenses may be more appropriate for their age group.

However, supply of prescription glasses to those under 16 is not possible online due to regulation set by The General Optical Council [39.11 Statutory Regulation]. This regulation states that the dispensing of prescription glasses by an unqualified person is not permitted by law to dispense to children under 16 and patients who are registered as severely visually impaired or visually impaired (blind or partially sighted).

However, you may purchase the 'frame only option' and have varifocal lenses fitted in person by a registered optician in their practice.
Sales of spectacles to those under sixteen or with serious visual impairment can only be made by, or under, the supervision of a registered practitioner.

Frame Compatibility for Varifocal Lenses: Finding the Perfect Match

Selecting the right frame for your varifocal lenses is crucial for both style and functionality. The frame you choose can impact the comfort of wearing your varifocal glasses and the overall visual experience. At PRET A VOIR, we're here to guide you through the process of finding frames that work harmoniously with your varifocal lenses.

Frame Size Considerations:

When it comes to varifocal lenses, frame size matters. The size of the frame affects the size of the lens, which in turn determines the available space for different prescription zones – distance, intermediate, and near vision. Larger frames generally provide a larger reading area, ensuring more comfortable reading and close-up tasks. However, the frame size should also be proportional to your face size to maintain a balanced and stylish appearance.

Proper Fitting is Key:

A proper fit is essential for optimal visual performance and comfort. Ill-fitting frames can result in inaccurate prescription alignment and decreased clarity. When trying on frames, make sure they sit comfortably on your nose without slipping down or causing pressure points. The frame temples should also fit snugly behind your ears. Our trained opticians can help ensure a proper fit during the fitting process, ensuring that your varifocal lenses perform at their best.

Impact of Frame Styles:

Different frame styles can influence your visual experience with varifocal lenses:

  • Full-Rim Frames: These frames encircle the lenses, providing ample space for varifocal zones. They are a great choice for maximizing the reading area, making them ideal for prolonged reading and close work.

  • Semi-Rimless Frames: These frames have a rim only on the top half of the lenses. While they offer a sleek and lightweight option, the reduced lens area can impact the size of the varifocal zones.

  • Rimless Frames: Rimless frames offer a minimalist look by attaching the lenses directly to the temples. While they provide an unobstructed view, they may have limitations in accommodating larger varifocal zones.

  • Frame Shape: The shape of the frame can influence how well the varifocal zones align with your eyes. Round, oval, square, and rectangular frames each offer different proportions for your prescription zones.

Tolerance Periods for Varifocal Lenses and Recommendations for First-Time Users:

Understanding the Tolerance Period:

When transitioning to varifocal lenses for the first time, it's important to recognize that there is an adjustment or tolerance period.

Varifocal lenses offer a seamless progression of prescription strengths for different distances, but adapting to this change may take a short period. Your eyes and brain need time to learn how to utilize the various focal points effectively.

Recommendations for First-Time Varifocal Users:

Be Patient:
Understand that the initial experience with varifocal lenses may feel different from what you're accustomed to. Give yourself time to adapt and avoid making snap judgments during the first few days.

Wear Them Regularly: Consistency is key. Wear your varifocal glasses throughout your daily activities, allowing your eyes to become accustomed to the shifting focal points.

Practice Head Movements: To access different zones of the lens, practice moving your head rather than just your eyes. Tilt your head slightly up for distance vision, level for intermediate tasks, and down for reading.

Start Slowly: Begin by using your varifocal lenses for familiar tasks like walking or driving. As you become more comfortable, gradually introduce tasks that require intermediate and close-up vision.

Give It Time: The tolerance period varies for individuals, but most people adjust within a week or two. If you experience any discomfort or dizziness beyond this period, contact our advisors for guidance.

Seek Assistance: If you're having trouble adapting, reach out to our experienced advisors. They can provide tips, answer questions, and address any concerns you may have.

Explore Additional Options: If the tolerance period is extended and you're still facing challenges, our advisors can discuss alternative lens types or make adjustments to ensure your comfort.

Regular Eye Check-ups: Schedule regular eye check-ups with your eye care professional to monitor your vision and ensure that your varifocal prescription remains accurate.

Remember, the goal of varifocal lenses is to provide clear and comfortable vision at various distances. With patience, practice, and the assistance of our knowledgeable team, you'll soon experience the convenience and benefits that varifocal lenses offer.

As a customer-focused online optician, PRET A VOIR is dedicated to helping you make a smooth transition to varifocal lenses. Contact us through Live Chat, Phone, or Email, and our experts will be delighted to guide you through this exciting journey to improved vision.

Varifocal Coatings

Enhance Your Varifocal Experience with Advanced Lens Coatings and Treatments

Varifocal lenses bring versatility and convenience to your vision, and with the addition of advanced lens coatings and treatments, you can elevate your eyewear experience even further. These coatings are designed to provide a range of benefits that enhance visual comfort, improve durability, and boost overall lens performance. Let's explore the key coatings and treatments available for varifocal lenses and understand why they are essential for your eyewear.

Anti-Reflective Coatings (AR)

Anti-reflective coatings are a game-changer for varifocal lenses. They minimize glare caused by reflections from light sources, such as headlights, computer screens, and indoor lighting. This reduction in glare not only enhances visual clarity but also reduces eye strain, especially during nighttime driving or prolonged digital device use. By allowing more light to pass through the lens, AR coatings also make your eyes more visible to others, creating a natural and appealing appearance.

Scratch-Resistant Coatings

Everyday wear and tear can take a toll on your eyewear. Scratch-resistant coatings create a protective layer on the lens surface, guarding against minor scratches and abrasions that can compromise your vision and the aesthetics of your varifocal lenses. By maintaining the integrity of the lens, these coatings extend the lifespan of your eyewear, ensuring that your varifocal lenses continue to provide clear and comfortable vision over time.

UV Protection

UV protection is essential for preserving your eye health. Harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can contribute to various eye conditions, including cataracts and macular degeneration. UV protection coatings shield your eyes from these harmful rays, safeguarding your ocular well-being while you enjoy outdoor activities. Whether you're strolling on a sunny day or engaging in outdoor sports, UV protection ensures that your varifocal lenses contribute to your long-term eye health.

Hydrophobic and Oleophobic Coatings

Hydrophobic and oleophobic coatings are designed to repel water, oil, and smudges from the lens surface. These coatings minimize the buildup of moisture, fingerprints, and dirt, ensuring that your varifocal lenses remain clear and easy to clean. With hydrophobic and oleophobic coatings, you can maintain optimal visual clarity throughout the day, even in challenging weather conditions.

Blue Light Filtering Coatings

In today's digital age, prolonged exposure to blue light emitted by screens can lead to digital eye strain and disrupt your sleep cycle. Blue light filtering coatings help mitigate these effects by reducing blue light transmission, promoting more comfortable and relaxed vision during extended digital device use. These coatings are especially beneficial for individuals who spend significant time on computers, tablets, and smartphones.

By incorporating these advanced lens coatings and treatments into your varifocal lenses, you're investing in enhanced visual comfort, improved durability, and superior overall performance.

Whether you're seeking a clearer view, greater resilience against scratches, protection from harmful UV rays, or reduced digital eye strain, these coatings are designed to optimize your eyewear experience. Our experienced team at PRET A VOIR is here to guide you in selecting the right lens coatings and treatments that align with your lifestyle and vision needs, ensuring that your varifocal lenses provide exceptional clarity, comfort, and style.

Varifocal Lenses

Choosing the Right Lens Material: Finding the Perfect Balance

Selecting the appropriate lens material is a crucial step in optimizing your eyewear experience. Different lens materials offer varying benefits in terms of weight, durability, and aesthetics. At PRET A VOIR, we offer a range of options to cater to your individual preferences and vision needs.

Standard Plastic Lenses

Standard plastic lenses are a classic choice known for their affordability and versatility. They are relatively lightweight and offer good optical clarity. While they may have a slightly thicker profile compared to other materials, they remain a practical option for those seeking budget-friendly eyewear. Standard plastic lenses are an excellent choice for individuals with lower prescriptions and a desire for traditional eyewear aesthetics.

Polycarbonate Lenses

Polycarbonate lenses are engineered for durability and impact resistance. These lenses are significantly lighter and thinner than standard plastic lenses, making them a comfortable choice for extended wear. Polycarbonate lenses also provide inherent UV protection, shielding your eyes from harmful sun rays. Due to their durability, polycarbonate lenses are ideal for active individuals, children, and those who prioritize lightweight eyewear.

High-Index Lenses

High-index lenses are designed to reduce lens thickness and weight while maintaining optimal optical performance. These lenses are particularly beneficial for individuals with higher prescriptions, as they can significantly reduce the "bulky" appearance of thick lenses. High-index lenses offer a sleeker aesthetic and a more comfortable fit. Their advanced refractive properties also minimize distortion, providing sharper and clearer vision. While high-index lenses may be costlier, their benefits in terms of aesthetics and visual comfort make them a popular choice for many wearers.

Our experienced team of opticians is here to help you navigate the lens material options and choose the one that best suits your lifestyle and visual preferences. Whether you prioritize lightweight comfort, durability, or a sleek and stylish look, we'll guide you through the selection process.

By understanding your unique needs, we can recommend the lens material that will enhance your overall eyewear experience. Contact us via Live Chat, Phone, or Email, and let us assist you in selecting the perfect lens material for your varifocal glasses.

At PRET A VOIR, we're dedicated to ensuring that your eyewear not only provides exceptional vision but also reflects your individual style.

Care and Maintenance For Varifocal Glasses

Proper maintenance and care are essential to ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your varifocal glasses.
Here are some easy-to-follow instructions recommended by opticians, specifically tailored to varifocal lenses:

1. Cleaning:

  • Use a lens cleaning solution recommended by your optician. Avoid household cleaners or abrasive materials.
  • Gently rinse your lenses under lukewarm water to remove debris before cleaning.
  • Apply a small amount of cleaning solution to both sides of the lenses.
  • Use a microfiber lens cleaning cloth to gently wipe the lenses in a circular motion, starting from the center and moving outward.

2. Handling:

  • Always handle your varifocal glasses with clean, dry hands to prevent smudges and dirt.
  • Hold the glasses by the temples (arms) to avoid touching the lenses directly.
  • Avoid placing the glasses on your head when you are not wearing them. Also avoid placing your lenses face-down when not wearing. Always return your glasses to their protective case in between wears.

3. Storing:

  • Store your varifocal glasses in a protective case when not in use. This prevents scratches, dust, and accidental damage.
  • Keep your glasses away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures, as they can damage coatings and frames.

4. Avoid Harsh Conditions:

  • Avoid exposing your varifocal glasses to harsh chemicals, including hairspray, perfume, and household cleaners, as they can damage coatings.
  • Remove your glasses before engaging in activities like swimming or using a sauna, as exposure to water or high heat can affect the lens coatings.

5. Adjustments and Repairs:

  • If your glasses become loose or feel uncomfortable, visit your optician for adjustments. Attempting to adjust them yourself can lead to misalignment.
  • If your varifocal glasses need repairs or adjustments, always consult a professional optician rather than attempting to fix them yourself.

6. Regular Check-ups:

  • Schedule regular check-ups with your optician to ensure your varifocal lenses are in optimal condition and your prescription is up to date.
  • Professional cleaning and adjustments during these visits can help maintain clear vision and comfort.

By following these care instructions, you can extend the lifespan of your varifocal glasses and enjoy clear and comfortable vision for years to come. Remember that proper care not only enhances the performance of your lenses but also contributes to your overall eyewear satisfaction.
