In 1927, Ferragamo returned to Italy, settling in Florence, where he won awards for his footwear design and started designing bags and silk scarves. In 1937, Salvatore Ferragamo released his first ready-to-wear clothing collection designed by Giovanna Gentile Ferragamo. In 1960, Salvatore Ferragamo died aged 62 and his wife, Wanda Ferragamo Miletti took over the company. In the following years, the company continued to win awards as well as gaining a highly-coveted client list including the likes of Brigitte Bardot, Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren and Eva Peron.
