The brand Carrera was founded in 1956, inspired by the Carrera Panamericana auto race, in Austria by Wilhelm Anger. Wilhelm Anger was a sports eyewear maker and in 1964 developed and patented a material called ‘Optyl’ which was a heat-hardened plastic weighing 20% less than acetate. This development resulted in a reduction of allergic reactions and improved fit of eyewear through a memory effect that provided permanent elasticity and dimensional stability.
Carrera have continuously strived to be at the forefront of design as well as at the helm of popular culture with their classic glasses designs. The Carrera Eyewear can be seen on celebrities such as Gwen Stefani, Kanye West, Brad Pitt, Britney Spears and Johnny Depp. They have also featured in many movies, perhaps most notably in Al Pacino’s Scarface.
