Bevel, established in 1999 by Richard Mewha and Rick Nelson, emerged from a shared belief in a unique creative vision and the desire to fill a niche in eyewear design. Their journey began in the year of Mewha's first child, and despite lacking formal design training, they aimed to craft eyewear that seamlessly blended wearability and flattering aesthetics, drawing inspiration from vibrant cosmetic palettes. Working with Japanese artisanal craftsmen from the outset, they developed a profound appreciation for the pursuit of perfection in engineering and innovative technical design.
Claudio Arena, a charismatic force and idiom enthusiast, joined the team as a partner 12 years ago, contributing to the brand's ongoing success. While Nelson has since retired, Bevel's narrative mirrors that of many independent businesses – marked by challenges, learning from mistakes, and resilience in the face of international crises.
Rejecting warnings about the threats of Lasik and online retail, Bevel maintained a focus on personal service, quality, and comfort, emerging stronger. Operating as an extended family, Bevel values relationships, trust, respect, and loyalty cultivated over 24 years. The brand has played a leadership role in unifying and promoting independent eyewear designers through events like LOFT NYC and LOFT SF. Additionally, Bevel proudly sponsors charitable causes, donating eyewear to those in need in various global locations, including Tanzania, Guyana, and Haiti. Above all, Bevel remains committed to learning, giving, and finding joy in their craft. Richard Mewha signs off as "El Presidente," encapsulating the brand's spirited and familial ethos.
