Oscars 2023 Eyewear - Seeing Stars on the Red Carpet

Let's talk Oscars 2023 eyewear styles exclusively from the red carpet...

What Are The Oscars?

The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, are an annual awards ceremony honouring achievements in the film industry. The awards are presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, a professional organisation made up of actors, directors, producers, and other industry professionals.

The first Academy Awards ceremony was held in 1929, and since then, the Oscars have become one of the most prestigious and highly anticipated events in the entertainment industry. Winning an Oscar is considered one of the highest honours in the film industry, and the awards ceremony itself is a star-studded event that attracts worldwide attention.

The 95th Academy awards were broadcasted on the 13th of March - at midnight (GMT) and hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, which was sure to keep the audience amused and engrossed with his satirical humorous ways.

Some notable moments from this year's award included Brendan Fraser receiving his Oscar alongside an exceptional standing ovation for his role in the acclaimed film "The Whale" and John Travolta shedding a tear whilst he introduced the In Memoriam segment, referring to his Grease co-star Olivia Newton-John, who was the first name shown. Finally, Rihanna's performance of "Lift Me Up" from "Blackpanther: Wakanda Forever" took the crowd by storm, which was no surprise after her Super Bowl Halftime Show performance last month.

Here at Pretavoir, when it comes to awards ceremonies, we like to keep an eye on the red carpet before the event begins to pick out our favourite looks from the evening. This year, we took a closer look at the eyewear of those who walked the red carpet. Here are some of our favourites...

Our Oscars 2023 Eyewear Top 5...

LENNY KRAVITZ

Lenny Kravitz Oscars 2023The American singer, songwriter, musician, and actor brought his unique and distinctive style to the 95th annual awards as he was head to toe in a silk, flared leg, Saint Laurent outfit. He paired the 70s-inspired rockstar look with numerous overlapping chunky silver chains paired alongside a cross pendant necklace, and sleek black YSL frames. To get his look, shop the Saint Laurent SL 564 006. Saint Laurent eyewear is made with high-quality materials and crafted with attention to detail in mind. With iconic designs and association with high-end fashion, YSL eyewear is increasingly popular across the globe. Kravitz is known for his effortlessly cool aesthetic, and he certainly kept up his image for this year's Oscars, especially with his luxurious and mysterious black shades.

SHIRLEY KURATA

Shirley Kurata OscarsCostume designer Shirley Kurata was up for her first nomination for costume design for the Oscar-winning best picture, "Everything Everywhere All at Once." Kurata is a well-known costume designer, working in the fashion industry for over 20 years, creating unique and eye-catching designs for music videos, advertising campaigns, films, and TV shows. Known for her bold, colourful, and eclectic style, Kurata certainly didn't shy away from this style on the red carpet. The designer wore a bright red floor-length dress with embellished detailing and sheer draped sleeves. To tie the look together, she paired the dress with bold, red clear lens frames. Red frames are always a good idea. A unique style statement can sometimes be hard to achieve with traditional eyewear, and with the colour red being associated with passion, energy, and confidence, they can help make a statement. As well as this, celebrities and fashion influencers have popularised red frames over the years making them more sought-after and desirable worldwide. Shop our collection of red glasses.

BRENDAN FRASER

It was a heartwarming night for Brendan Fraser as he won the best-actor award, and his family certainly dedicated their support towards Fraser -who had received his first-ever nomination after almost 30 years in the industry. His family had viewers in awe as he appeared on the red carpet with his girlfriend and two biggest supporters, his sons, Holden and Lelan, who gushed over how proud they were of their father. The father and his sons looked extremely dapper, and Brendan finished his look with thick-framed, round-lens glasses - his usual style. Although we aren't sure of the exact brand, the frames look extremely similar to Garrett Leight's model Bryne 1112.

KE HUY QUAN

Oscars 2023 eyewear

The Vietnamese and Chinese actor and stunt coordinator Ke Huy Quan won best supporting actor for the film, "Everything Everywhere All at Once", after being considered a notable favourite for the award. Upon receiving the award, Quan appeared tearful and overwhelmed as he announced to the public, "Mom, I just won an Oscar!" Before his acceptance speech, Ke Huy Quan made his way along the iconic red carpet in a slim-fit, black tuxedo paired with a dainty bowtie and silver broaches. Quan always wears opticals, and we believe his signature frames are from the New York family-owned eyewear brand, Moscot. We believe that his frames are the Lemtosh model in black. Although Moscot is not a brand we currently stock here at Pretavoir, for those who have stumbled across this post living in Scotland, UK, keep your eyes peeled on the i2i Optometrists website for the latest Moscot collection.

SAMUEL L. JACKSON

Oscars 2023 eyewearOur final Oscars 2023 eyewear favourite is the highly sought-after actor Samuel L. Jackson who attended last night's event looking as sleek as ever. Having been nominated for numerous awards throughout his career, including an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in "Pulp Fiction", he has also proved over time that he is "one of Hollywood's brightest stars." Jackson sported a textured silver metallic suit jacket, paired against a crisp white shirt, and a matching silver bowtie. Tying in silver hues, Jackson wore a pair of transparent frames. Clear frames are becoming increasingly popular for several reasons. Firstly, they are extremely versatile, making them a suitable choice for any outfit or style. Secondly, they may not appear as harsh on the face - they are the perfect option for those looking to avoid darker-coloured frames. Clear glasses are timeless and can be worn by anyone - check out our collection of transparent frames here to find yourself a pair similar to Jackson's.

That's all our favourite eyewear styles rounded up from this year's Academy Awards. Stay tuned to our blog for our future 'get the looks'.
