Prada was started in 1913 by Mario and Martino Prada. The Prada brothers focused on leather goods under the name ‘Fratelli Prada’ in Milan’s prestigious Galleria Vittorio Emmanuele II. Concentrating on handbags, trunks, accessories and jewellery Prada was quickly recognised for its innovative designs applying sophisticated techniques to fine materials.
The superb attention-to-detail of Prada's leather goods into the forefront of aristocracy. The most stylish members of the haute-bourgeoisie in Europe carrying their designs. In 1919, Prada became the official supplier of the Italian royal family.
Mario Prada held the belief that women had no role in business. Therefore, he prevented female family members from joining the company. Ironically, Mario's son had no interest in the business, so instead his daughter Luisa Prada took over the Prada empire.
Working as her father's successor, Luisa successfully ran the family business for almost twenty years. Then, her daughter Miuccia Prada joined the company in 1970. And in 1978, Miuccia Prada married Tuscan entrepreneur Patrizio Bertelli. Together their combined creativity and business-savvy empowered the brand to prosper.
Today, the pair are still at the helm of the Prada family business. Miuccia & Bertelli continue to work innovatively to create sharp, yet unconventional looks.
